I really want to adopt a puppy to accompany me to law school. You don't even understand my obsession with animals. I have been waiting forever to own little pup of my own!!! I feel confident that I'd be able to take care of a dog, even with the pressures of next year. I'm a responsible and mature person. However I could speaking out of lack of experience! Also, keep in mind that I'll be in the city, probably either Brooklyn or Queens, so apartment living is a given.
.....So, what do you all think?

As you know I'm a 1L in my second semester. I got a dog about a month into this semester. It's totally doable. However, I was glad we didn't get him right away when we started school. Several people we know did, and two of them almost gave away their dogs (and no one wants to be in that position!). You may want to give yourself one semester to get into a routine and make sure you really DO have the time to come let a dog out and come play with them during the day. But that's just my opinion and I'm biased because that's what I did!
:)
I agree w/ Miss Type-A. It's doable. Just note, do you want to study in the library or at home (to be with the little guy)? If at home, make sure your environment is conducive to studying ... I always seem to find a million things other than studying to do. If you bury yourself in the library, it might be harder to be an appropriate fur-mama. Best of luck in making the decision! Where are you applying? Xoxo-BLC
It's doable, but can be a challenge. I'm a 2L, got a puppy at the end of last summer and had to let my parents take her around October because I realized that living in an apartment where she didn't have a lot of room, and with my schedule (not being home for large portions of the day) was not fair to her. So really think it over and like the girls said above give it a semester to get yourself adjusted first. Hope this helps!
I think it's a great idea. I have a little chihuahua, and I love her. She is completely dependent on me, makes me feel loved. They are great companions, I would get a female dog, they aren't as rowdy and they are (in my opinion) easier to train.
Get yourself settled in first, and if you don't have enough time for her/him, then don't get a dog. It isn't fair to leave them alone all day. It's a huge responsibility, and if you can dedicate a lot of time to them, then do it.
So glad you stopped by my blog! I can't wait to catch up on yours :)
If you have 2 people, a dog is manageable 2nd semester of 1L - if it is just you, I would hold out. Personally, whenever I was not in the law library, I wanted to be in the bar. And neither of those is conducive to giving a puppy the love and attention s/he needs. That said, my friends and I were very self-centered in law school - we were either in the zone, or drunk. I am sure you'll work out whatever is best for you :)
I love puppies; however, with me living in an apartment I have never done it. Any time I would have to take a dog out it would have to be on a leash and they wouldn't get to run around much. Plus the apt. isn't that large so it doesn't give the puppy that much run around room. I figured with a school schedule and apt. it wasn't feisble; however, what is good for me isn't good for everyone. I would hold out, but if you do decide to get one good luck!
I'm not in law school, but I do take 12 hours and I also work full time. I have two chihuahuas, and I've never had a problem. Even before I got married, I could handle them on my own.
You should look into rescueing a dog, or maybe even just start out by fostering a small dog and see if it works. Then you can make a more educated decision.
Adopting rescued dogs is different than buying a dog. My rescues are thankful for everything, not like my friend's spoilt picky dogs. Also, this sounds horrible... but when I adopted my dogs, they didn't know how to bark. They can now, but they still don't. That's really a plus when you are living in an apartment. I never had to worry about them being loud during the day, and making someone mad.
Good luck with whatever you decide! :)
I think you should go for it...although it can be difficult at times, there is nothing like coming home from a bad day and having your puppy greet you with lots of kisses...a dog is great for cheering you up and keeping you company! =]
I get your desire, I so badly want to move into an apartment and adopt a dog. I think if you're going to do it you should get the dog as early in the summer as possible so that you have time to start working out behavior problems if they exist and get into a schedule.
Also, remember the financial commitment here. I like what a previous poster said about studying at home with the dog v. the library. You might want to make sure you get a breed that can live well in a city apartment. Finally, if you want to be traveling and taking weekend trips, you'll need to figure out what to do with the dog during that time if you can't bring it.
Ugh, so many things to think about that are keeping me from getting one myself! I think if you really want to do it, you can. Good luck!
I always, always wanna get a puppy. Most people in the house hate animals though. Or allergic.
I curse my puppy-less life all the time.
I want my puppy back so badly, we had one and then moved and we couldn't have him stay with us in the apartment. So this family started watching him, and now they love him so much, so I basically gave it to them... but now I want my own puppy again.
It's doable, but it is a bit of work, good luck! Love your blog, just found it!

I've wanted a puppy for soooo long. I travel too much for work and I live in an apartment on the top floor. I've wondered about taking the puppy out and if it would work well while I'm living in the apartment. Whatever you decide, good luck.
Cute blog!! A dog is the best companion ever! Definitely wait to get into your routine and then look at the local shelters and online adoption sites - there are tons of puppies that need a person like you willing to take on the addition. A small dog is best for an apartment, as long as you are able to take him/her on plenty of walks. Good luck!!
